Hiking and nature experiences in Moldova

While Moldova may not receive the same level of tourist traffic as other European countries, these qualities contribute to its allure as a hidden gem. As travelers seek more unique and authentic experiences, Moldova's appeal as an off-the-beaten-path destination is likely to grow over time.

Moldova offers a surprising variety of hiking experiences, from limestone cliffs and river valleys to ancient forests and peaceful monasteries. Here are some of the best routes to explore:

  • Old Orhei Natural Reservation Hiking Trail

The Bacota hiking route in the Old Orhei Reservation offers one of the most scenic and atmospheric nature walks in Moldova. This trail follows the meandering Răut River, passing limestone cliffs, open meadows, and panoramic viewpoints that reveal the dramatic landscape shaping this historic area.

Along the route, hikers encounter ancient rock formations, remnants of old settlements, and traditional villages that preserve the rural charm of central Moldova. The trail is moderately easy, suitable for leisure hikers, nature lovers, and photography enthusiasts, with plenty of stops for rest and observation.

Late lunch with traditional food at agro-pension in Butuceni or Trebujeni village. Overnight in a local guesthouse.

  • Full-Day Hiking Trip to Tipova Cave Monastery and Reservation & Saharna Monastery

Tipova Cave Monastery stands out as a remarkable rock-hewn monastic complex, arguably the most impressive in Moldova and one of the largest in Europe.

It is said that some cells were carved into the rocks along the banks of the Dniester as early as the 10th-12th centuries, serving as protection against barbarian invasions. The Țipova Natural Reservation trail features a scenic hike through a rocky, forested gorge along the Dniester River, highlighting a 10th-12th century cave monastery complex and multiple waterfalls.

The landscape in this area is simply stunning: the tranquil waters of the Dniester, steep cliffs concealing hundreds of cells and caves, the beauty of nature, and waterfalls. The route typically starts near the monastery, descending into a valley with sheer cliffs, lush greenery, and the Tipova River, leading to cascades.

If you're willing to brave the cold and expand your travel experiences, visiting Moldova during the winter months (December to March) can also be an affordable option. This time our Moldovans go for what they have the best: rural tourism, wine tourism and culinary experiences, being once again to the liking of those who prefer outdoor activities, but also those who are looking for authentic gastronomy and wines of very good quality. In the past, winters in Moldova came with fairy tale-like snow and cold weather, with cloudy skies and sometimes very low temperatures. But in these past few decades, with the climate changing, it’s difficult to predict what will be. Last time, during the winter time, the weather is moderately cold and dry. Winter temperatures in Moldova may vary from -1 degree Celsius to -5 degree.
